BLOG #4: Cartridges for Kids!---Milestone

On June 14, 2011, Tyler and I start making posters. We finish three posters, and we hang them in the hallways. I know that the posters won't help that much since it is the end of the year; however, I just want to at least get the words out there. Next year I want to make this project more well known and my goal is to make a brochures and put it in the office.

-Next milestone: Pack the cartridges that the office and some teachers collected.

BLOG #3: Cartridges for Kids!---Milestone

On June 13, I asked people who are interested in helping me with this project. Tyler and Dustin were the two people who wanted to help. Dustin is not in Leadership, but he still wants to help anyway. Even though there are not a lot of people interested in helping, I'm fine with that because I think that I don't need that many helpers since this is an ongoing project. My hope to continue this project until I graduate from AHS.

-Next goal is to start making poster (June 15)

BLOG #2: Cartridges for Kids!--Milestone

So on June 8, I talked to Ms. Pappas, and she gave me the binder that has all the materials that I need for this project. After the meeting, I read all of those papers just to know more about this project. After reading all those   papers,  I printed a new copy of the price list of the ink cartridges (June 10). I printed a new copy because the one in the binder was two years ago. My next goal is to ask people to help (June 13).

BLOG #1: Cartridges for Kids!--Milestone

On June 8, 2011, I talked to Ms. Pappas about this project. I have to ask her about what this project is really about. My goal is to be able to start planning this project after I talk to her. I talk to her before and she said that she'll give me some paper works to see before I actually start planning. So hopefully, I'll get those paper works during the meeting.

HELP#2: Road Clean-Up

I helped Tyler with his Road Clean-Up project. We went to Alpaca This Ranch! and then we were divided into two groups. In my group, there were three people: Lea, Lina, and I. We cleaned up the end of the road, while Tyler's group cleaned the beginning of the road. While I was cleaning, I noticed that there were a lot of cigarette buds and beer cans. I was happy that I could help the community and the environment. I'm glad that I decided to help Tyler because I was able to meet new people and also CLEAN UP THE ROAD!!!! Cleaning up the road might sounds uninteresting, but I have to admit that it was the best experience ever! After doing that project, I tell myself that I must do that again or even once a month. I realized that there are not a lot of people who help the environment; therefore, as a leader, I must step up and be different. I told myself that I cannot be one of the millions that throw soda can or candy wrapper on the street. IT'S BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY! Clean-up road is now on my "favorite things to do" list :)

Lead Project #2 Team Member Outline: Cartridges for Kids!!!

The primary purpose of this project to make the environment green-er and also makes profit for Interact Club. It is very important to recycle the used ink cartridges because can negatively affect the environment. Despite the fact that I'm in Interact Club, I decided to take on this project so that I could help make some moneys so that we could use it later on. This project align with our mission and goals as a class because the main goal of this class is to help providing greener environment while helping a club at the same time. As a the one who leads this project, I am suppose to be the one who plan everything and making sure that my plans are taking into actions. My job is to also keep my helpers on top of things....that also include myself. As the leader, I believe that in order my group and I get the work done, we must contact each other frequently. We must have a couple meetings before we start doing the project. In addition, I want to make sure that each one of us has each contact so that it would make thing much easier. I know that even though my helper and I stay on top of things and plan everything out thoroughly, we will face some obstacles. One of the obstacles that I think I will most likely have to deal with is, people not donating their empty ink cartridges. If people don't donate their empty ink cartridges, this project will be an epic fail. My plan for overcoming this obstacle, I must do a really good job with getting the words out. I need to make this project more well known in AHS. Since I'll continue this project until next year, I will come up with new ideas and how I should advertise this particular project.

Lead Project #2 Outline: Cartridges for Kids!!!

Project Title: Cartridge drive for "Cartridges for Kids"
Project Time Table:
Finish by: Ongoing project
Mentor or advisor for project:

Hey, everyone...so I'm currently planning another project. The next project that I'll lead this time is a cartridge drive. I think this drive will be pretty successful because it is an ongoing thing. I know that a couple years ago, someone led this project, and it was really successful because parents donate hundreds of empty laser and inkjet cartridges. In addition, I think it will be pretty successful if I do a really good job with advertising.  Hopefully, people will donate all their ink cartridges, well the ones that were already used. All the cartridges that people donate will be put into boxes and mail to CFK (Cartridges for Kids). CFK is a recycling program that pays schools and non-profit organization cash for empty laser and inkjet cartridges. The profits that CFK gives will be given to Aviation High School's Interact Club. This project aligns with our mission and goals as a class because it helps raise money for a club and also helps the environment.

The obstacles and or challenges that I will anticipate when working on this project is getting people to donate their empty laser and inkjet cartridges. In addition, I know that some people refill their ink cartridges; therefore, it will be pretty hard to get a lots of empty cartridges. Moreover, another obstacle that I will most likely have to deal with is getting the words out. I have to do really with advertising. I have to get people interested in doing this. I need to show people that they should donate their empty ink cartridges. Since the profits go to Interact Club, I think a lot of people with be a little hesitated.

My primary goal for this project is to meet all the milestones. In order for me to finish this project successfully, I must follow my plan and also have a back up plan. I must follow all my milestones. Since this is an ongoing project (until next year) I don't know when this project will be finish. Hopefully, I will be able to do this project every year until I graduate from AHS. My goal is to get this project started this month. I want to get the words out in the next couple weeks. I also want to make brochure; however, I think that won't happen until the beginning of next year. My hope is to start making posters this upcoming week (the third week of June). For instance, I want to start putting boxes in the office, in the hallways and maybe the cafeteria on the same week as the above.

I have all these milestones listed out, but I know that I'll not meet all of these milestones if I don't get help from other people. To ensure that I'll reach my project milestones, I must get help from my peers and teachers. I believe that with their help, I'll not forget about it, and I'll always be on top of things. In order for me to overcome foreseen obstacles I must be really organize, responsible and also getting things done on time.

I think some of the materials that I'll need to successfully carry out for my project include boxes and pre-paid DedEx labels. I talked to Bonnie two weeks ago, and she said that the office have all of that or I could just printed it off the website.

Beside materials, I also need people to help. As far as I'm concerned, I have at least five helpers. Hopefully, as the year progresses, I will get more helpers. Since it is only the beginning of this project, I don't expect a lot of people to help; however, in the future having 10-15 helpers would be great. My goal is to try to get a lot of people to be involve with this because this project does not only help Interact Club, but it also help the environment. It will make our school greener. I think I could also get help from the people in Ecology Club because it deals with the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

This is such a big project andmy goal to hold myself and my group accountable for the success of the project is to hold a lot of meeting. I will also contact each other via emails or phone. But my hope is to hold a lot of meetings because meetings seem to be one of the most effective ways.

BLOG #6: Post-Project Reflection

Sadly, what I envisioned as the end result of this project did not happen :(
During the planning process, I thought that many people would come. However, on the day of the event, only five people showed up. However, on the bright side we were able to cleans 4-5 classrooms. At least the the classrooms will be cleaner and tidier for a substantial period of time.

Before I did this project, I thought that at least twelve people would come since many people said that they are interested. However, a day before the event happen, volunteers unexpectedly dropping out. It is pretty sad that only five people came.

Throughout this project I had faced with a couple problems. The major problem that I had to go through was when people dropping out a day before the event happen. People sign-up because they were interested, but on the day the event happen  they did not show up. About fifteen people sign-up, but only five show up. Not even half of those who sign-up show up :( It still surprised me even though I already knew that this would happen. I did not expected it to be that bad. I tried to do many things to stop this problem from occurring; however, it still happened anyway.

On the bright side, with five people, we were able to clean the classrooms. The rooms look neat, clean, and organize. The computer are clean and straighten. Trashes on the floors are gone and drawings on tabletop are vanished. I'm proud that even thought there were only five people, we were able to accomplish our goal and make our school looks cleaner and nicer. We were able to wipe all the germs out of the tables and chairs :p

With all the problems that I faced during this project, now I'm able to fix my plan for the next project. I learned that I should survey people first before doing a project. I should ask them if they are interested in it and would they come. Also, it would be a good idea to ask them to list the dates that they are free. In addition, for this project I went to each club to announced about it; however, I realized that I should also make posters and flyers. In order to make the next project successful, I need to do a better job at advertising.

What I should work on for next time is to be more outgoing. Don't feel reluctant with talking to different people. I still have a lot to work on to become a better leader. I need to know how to grab people attention. I need to inspire and get others excited about what I'm doing. I should be more involve and outgoing. By talking to people, I can complete my project successfully. In addition, I should make the event more interesting so that people would come.

For this project, Anthea was the only one who help. As a partner, we did pretty well. We were able to go through all the clubs to advertise this event.

I haven't finalize my idea for my next project yet. Some of the things that I am consider doing right now helping out the Highline Food Banks and volunteer at the library (individually--only me).

BLOG #5: Campus Clean-Up

Throughout this project, I tried to keep myself on top of everything. I was able to meet these milestones. I tried to keep myself organize and alert. With the helps from my peers and teachers, I was able to successfully meet the milestones and completed the project. My phone and planner are the two objects that keep me ahead of everything. I used my phone as my reminder. I create events and then on that day my phone would reminds me to do what I am suppose to do. My planner on the other hand allowed me to plan everything out so that I would not make any mistake. Without these two objects and help from my peers, I would not be able to accomplish all these milestones. By meeting these milestones, I was able to put together a campus clean-up :)

BLOG #4: Campus Clean-Up Milestone

May 3, 2011

On Tuesday the 3rd of May, I emailed to everyone who were interested in coming. The email was like a reminder. In the email, I asked people to tell me whether they can come or not. I noticed that not everyone reply to my email. Some of the people who told me that they can come never reply to my email as well. Overall, I think this was not as successful as I wish because I was expected that many people would reply, but eventually only two people replied. In the email I clarify everything. I also bold all the important information. In the "subject" line I capitalize everything so that it would pop out. However, as a result, I think people might not see the email or they just ignore it.
Moreover, on that day I wrote a letter to Kelly reminding him about the campus clean-up. Since he is the one to provide all the materials, I need to remind him. On April 13th, I talked to him briefly about this event. I gave him all the information, and list of materials. However, I did not write it down for him. It was a verbal conversation. I decided to write a letter to him on the 5th which served as a reminder. In the letter, I lists all the informations (i.e. when, where, why, and what) and I also list all the materials that I needed.

BLOG #3: Campus Clean-Up Milestones

Completed by: April 28, 2011

During club Anthea and I went to most of clubs in our school to talk about this campus clean-up. We did not go to the upperclassman clubs because of AP testing. Since this event occur during the AP testing window, we decided not to go bother the juniors and seniors. During this process, we gave people the description of this project (i.e. dates, time, what we will do and etc.). Then we asked people who are interested to raise their hands and we would give them a paper to write down their names and emails. About seven to eight people were interested in helping; however, some of them said that they can't guarantee that they will make it. As a result, I was able to meet this milestone. But sadly not many people can come and help making our campus cleaner :(

Next Steps:
-May 3, 2011 (Tuesday): Email to everyone about the campus clean-up. This email is like a reminder.      (People who gave me their emails)
-May 5, 2011 (Thursday): Remind Kelly--all the materials needed)

BLOG #2: Campus Clean-Up--Milestone 2

Completed by April 13, 2011

On the 13th of April, I talk to Interact and Ecology club about this campus clean-up. With the help from Tyler, I was able to accomplist this milestone. What I did was that I told Interact Club about the campus clean-up, then asked people who are interested to write down their emails and name. Tyler on the other hand, talked to Ecology Club about this campus clean-up. Sadly, no one is free on the day that this event will happen. I was going to change the date; however, many of my friends that I talked to during lunch are g free on that day, and they can probably come and help. Likewise, about seven to eight people from Interact Club are also interested in helping. So far they said that they can come unless there is a sudden change in their plan.

Next Steps:
-Talk to every club in our school

BLOG #1: Campus Clean-Up--Milestone

Completed by: April 11

On April 11, 2011, I talked to my friends about this campus clean-up. I was able to accomplish my milestone.I ask most of my friends if they are interesting in helping out, and some of them said that as for now, they can come. So far about six to seven people are interested incoming. I talked to them about the date, time, and what we will do there. Most of them think that they would love to help out because they think that our school need to have a clean-up. What I would like to change is probably talking to freshman and upper classman about this event because there might be more people who are interested in helping.

Next Step:
-Talk to Interact and Ecology Club--April 13, 2011

Campus Clean-Up: Team Member Outline

Campus Clean-Up
Group Contact Information:
Project Milestone dates:

The primary purpose of this project is to provide a clean and neat environment at schools for students to study and staffs to work. It is very important that the classrooms are clean because it allow students to work and study better. The clean environment allows the student to stay healthy and able to focus better.

This project align with our mission and goals as a class because the main goal of this class is to help providing a better environment for the community and school. As a leader, each student is expected to do something that would benefits his or her community and school. It is very important that each student do this because it allows them to meet different people and experience the real world. These different types of leadership projects allow student to reflect back on their action and also see the value of being a human being.

As the one who leads this project, I am suppose to be the one who plan everything out and making sure that my plans are taking into action. I am suppose to make sure that this project will be successful, and everything must be done thoroughly. In addition, I also need to make sure that all the people who participate will be there when this event happend.

In order for my group and I to get work done throughout the project, we cantact each other via email and meeting. During school time, we talk to each other during lunch. If we have any questions or ideas to share, we usually cantact each other via email. As the one who leads this project, I send out email to everyone as a reminder.

The larges obstacle in my way to success would be finding the right date and time so that everyone can attend. This will be the largest obstacle because everyone is busy with school works and extracirucular activities. It will be hard to find the date and time that everyone will be able to come.

It will be hard to overcome this obstacle; however, what I am going to do is to survey everyone first before coming up with the actual date and time. I would go to each club and ask them to write down their emails and names if they are interested in participating. Then I would email them about the date, and they have to reply whether they are free on that day. If a lot of people can attend then I would take that date and time. However, if not a lot of people can't come then I will ask them what day is a good day for them. I will email people again with the new date.

Campus Clean-Up

Project Title: Campus Clean-Up
Project Time Table:
Start on: April 14, 2011
Finish by:
Milestone dates:
        -April 14, 2011: Talk to ecology/interact club
Mentor or advisor for project: Mrs. Fitz

I envision that the campus clean-up would happen right after school with the help from various students in Leadership as well as members of ecology and interact club. The purpose of this event is to provide a clean environment for each classroom. There will be several tasks for students to do during this event. They will clean all the tables in each classroom, pick up trash and clean the computers are. This event will allow us students to help the janitors. The janitors are not able to clean all the places in each classroom; therefore, this event will allow us to complete that part. This project align with our mission and goals as a class because the school will be cleaner, and it provides a better environment for the students to learn and staffs to work.

Some of the obstacles and or challenges that I am anticipating when working on this project include get people excited with cleaning up and volunteers unexpectedly dropping out. I believe that these will be the two biggest obstacles because cleaning up is not something that people get excited to do. However, if I offer volunteer hours to students, more people would attend because I know that a lot of people are looking for places to volunteer so that they could get all the hours down.

To ensure that I reach project milestones on the dates listed above, I need to have a checklist to keep me on top of things. To overcome these foreseen obstacles I need to have a backup plan. In addition, I need to be extremely detailed and organized with every single part of this project.

Here're some of the materials that I need to successfully carry out my project:
-Gloves                                                 -Trash Bags
-Anti-Bacterial wipes                             -Paper Towels
-Other all purpose cleaner

Other things besides materials that I need to be successful in my project are people. I need at about 13-16 people for this project, but of course more is always better. I plan to divide people into team and there will probably about 2-3 in each team. Each team will be responsible for one classroom. Each person will have many options to choose from. They can either wipe the tables tops, clean the computer area, and pick up trash in the classroom. I will make sure that each person will have a job to do.

My plan to hold myself and my group accountable for the success of the project is to get together and have a meeting. I would also remind people either via email or at school. I hope that my frequent reminders of the event will prevent people from forgetting about it.
